KINGS COUNTY, Nova Scotia
Taxpayers want to know how their money is spent and the Municipality of Kings has the answers. A series of public focus groups on municipal taxation are scheduled for around the region, but residents who may not be able to attend a meeting will now be able to watch the full taxation presentation online.
“The presentation includes a general explanation of assessments, tax bills and services funded by taxes,” says Manager of Finance Kim Durling.
Durling says the video, which is available on YouTube (http://youtu.be/5Rl-PZt2FPc), is a tool to start open discussion on what parts of the current system are working and allow for residents to propose opportunities for improvement.
“We want residents who view the video, or come out to the public sessions, to follow up through an online survey,” says Durling. “It takes about 10 minutes and we hope to get input regarding priorities and what are fair taxes and fees for services.”
Upcoming public sessions include Thursday January 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the Kingston Fire Hall, Wednesday February 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the Louis Millett Complex in New Minas and Thursday February 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Centre in Port Williams.
